Market Update 10/22/26

SOXX is getting wrecked—down ~6% and trading near $479–481 (from yesterday’s $510.36 close). That’s the lowest level since late July and extends the slide from the June peak near $656 (now more than 25% off the highs). Semis are the clear source of the pain today.

What’s driving it

AI/ROI jitters are back. Lam Research (LRCX) is the biggest single weight, down ~9% after an outlook that was only in line (the market has been trained to expect beats-and-raises). Broader concerns about the sustainability of debt-fueled data-center and neocloud spending are resurfacing. Tesla and Meta earnings didn’t fully settle the debate — Meta’s free cash flow went negative for the first time as a public company, and Tesla’s guidance/margins were mixed.

Oil is surging on Middle East escalation. Brent is around $111–112 and WTI near $99 after fresh Houthi attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure/airport and reports that the U.S. and Israel are preparing renewed strikes on Iran after the midterms. Higher oil keeps inflation stickier and rates higher for longer — classic headwind for high-multiple growth and semis.
Positioning and technicals. Yesterday’s bounce is getting faded hard. Selling is concentrated in chips (AMD, INTC, MU, SNDK, AMAT, KLAC, etc.) more than a broad market exit. Equal-weight S&P is relatively stable, some defensive sectors are green, and VIX isn’t exploding. Asian markets (especially Korea) also got hit overnight on the same names.

Current tape snapshot (approximate, ~11:15 AM ET)

Nasdaq: down ~1.4–2%
S&P 500: down ~0.9–1.3%
Dow: milder, down ~0.3–0.5%
Semis and AI hardware are leading; megacaps mixed but not immune.

This is the same movie we’ve seen repeatedly in 2026: the AI trade gets crowded, expectations get extreme, then any combination of “guidance only in-line + oil spike + debt/ROI questions” triggers a sharp de-risking in the highest-beta names. The underlying demand story for AI infrastructure hasn’t collapsed, but the market is no longer willing to pay peak multiples while oil and rates stay elevated and every print has to be perfect.

Near-term, the pain can continue until we get either (1) a clear stabilization in oil/geo headlines or (2) fresh confirmation that hyperscaler/neocloud capex remains aggressive into 2027. Support levels people are watching on SOXX sit around the late-July lows and the 200-day moving average zone (~$470 area). A clean reclaim of $500+ would be the first sign the selling is exhausting.

Hang in there — these days suck. The tape is real, the drivers are real, and it’s concentrated enough that it doesn’t yet look like a full risk-off washout.
