Market Recap – Monday, October 19, 2026
Tech and AI names staged a solid rebound to start the week after last Friday’s sharp selloff (and the Nasdaq’s worst weekly drop since June). The rally was concentrated, with semiconductors and memory stocks leading after an 8-session losing streak in the Philly Semi Index — its longest since 2008.

What Drove the Day
Chip and memory names bounced hard. SanDisk, Micron, Intel (JPMorgan upgrade), AMD, Broadcom, and Western Digital led the recovery as sentiment around the AI trade stabilized. Amazon stood out, boosted by a Morgan Stanley upgrade that named it a top pick amid cloud optimism. CoreWeave also clawed back some of last week’s heavy losses.
Oil eased (WTI near $98, Brent around $108) on reports of potential increased Russian supply after the U.S. waived certain sanctions/tariffs. That eased pressure on energy-related inflation concerns that weighed on markets last week. Treasury yields edged higher, and breadth was mixed — tech and consumer discretionary did most of the lifting while other sectors lagged.
Today also marked the 39th anniversary of Black Monday 1987. Markets treated it like any other trading day.
Looking Ahead
This is a big earnings week that will test the AI trade:
Tuesday: Netflix and SpaceX (after the close)
Wednesday: Meta and Tesla (after the close)
Investors want to see massive AI-related Capex translate into revenue and margins. Guidance and commentary on spending/returns will matter as much as the headline numbers. Outside tech, names like GE Aerospace, GM, and others report earlier this week.
Bottom line: A classic relief bounce in the areas that were hit hardest last week. The tape is still selective, and the next few days of Mag 7/AI-related earnings will set the tone for whether this rebound has legs or was just a short-covering bounce. Stay selective and watch how the big names guide on AI investment returns.
If Morgan Stanley is right on their “big call”, these are names that also play.
