Market Wrap: October 14, 2026

It was a tough session. The S&P 500 fell 1.1% to 7,718.94, its worst day since July and the fifth loss in the six sessions since the recent all-time high. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.9% to 26,692.87, while the Dow held up better, slipping just 0.1% to 51,621.48. Small caps (Russell 2000) matched the Nasdaq’s -1.9% decline.

The catalyst was the September CPI print. Headline inflation accelerated to 3.7% year-over-year (above the 3.6% consensus and up from 3.4% in August), with core at 2.6%. Gasoline remains a major driver, up sharply both month-over-month and year-over-year. The data pushed the odds of an October Fed rate hike back toward a coin flip (roughly 45–50%) after they faded earlier in the week.

Tech and AI-related names led the selling. Semiconductors extended their recent weakness, CoreWeave and other high-beta AI infrastructure plays were hit hard, and higher-for-longer rate concerns weighed on the growth trade. Bank of America also lagged after its results, which included a sizable regulatory fine. Healthcare and a few defensive areas provided relative support, helping the Dow.

Two notable offsets into the close:

Treasury yields reversed their early spike and finished lower (the 10-year ended around 5.19% after trading well above 5.30% post-CPI). The bond market did not fully endorse a more aggressive hiking path.

Oil was barely red, giving back a small portion of recent gains tied to Middle East supply risks. Late-day bids appeared in the Nasdaq, preventing a cleaner washout, but the overall tone was risk-off. Stickier inflation, elevated oil, and stretched AI valuations continue to pressure the market’s leadership. Breadth was weak, and the session reinforced that higher rates remain a live risk into the October FOMC.

We’ll be watching PPI tomorrow and how the bond market reacts. The path of least resistance has turned lower for now, particularly in the growth complex.

Today was brutal for all things tech. Brutal.
