Truth be told I feel like a blockhead after today’s action in the gas patch. Sure, a takeover is unpredictable and unlikely to ever happen if you were long, but today it bit us while we short. Whether you were short XTO or the other names in the patch it didn’t matter as the entire sector rose in sympathy.
I was short XTO and EOG and took a thrashing in the “A” account if it makes you feel any better. These charts were setting up nicely and we were getting some help from the dollar of late. The question now is will APA,EOG and UPL come back in after the knee jerk bounce wears off?
XTO must be covered as it is getting bought, but the others may settle a bit. It is your call if you choose to stay short. Obviously they gapped up through the triggers so some of you may have covered or perhaps are still short. I got long a few things today for trades and am still long, TSTC which is on our list, NANO on weakness also on list, JEF and JPM warants (priced last week)a cheap way to have the right to buy JPM common at $42 for the next 10 years, I think they priced it cheap. Also VNO which broke out today and is on the list, IYR and all the other commercial real estate names look very bullish even though I hate them.
