The market opened with a swoon lower, as you remember the futures were way down until Warren Buffet announced the $40 billion purchase of BNI. Keep in mind that the transportation sector (IYT) benefited greatly from this news and is a big weighting in the DOW and S&P, the market would have been down significantly today without Buffet’s move.
Tomorrow will be a very big day as Bernanke speaks and we will see if today’s Buffet event loses its impact. Remember Warren lost about 50 points after he took his stake in GS. The market has a short memory and will do what it does regardless.
The 1025 is the line in the sand, if we lose that tomorrow or this week you can count on lower prices, 1109 then 980. On the other side of the coin, any perceived good news tomorrow and the shorts could have a field day, however I do think it will be muted and have a short shelf life as the unemployment number on Friday will loom large.
If anyone took the UYM trade, congrats, it took nerve to buy it in the early morning with the dollar strong, but it worked out. There are no new names tonight in front of the Fed.
